Overview

Set in the heart of a historic town, the Old Market Street project embodies the perfect fusion of historical preservation and contemporary design. This redevelopment project revitalizes two Grade II listed properties and their surroundings into a vibrant residential enclave, all while respecting the area's architectural and archaeological significance. Seven new build houses are added to the development.

Our Solution

Transforming this site was no ordinary undertaking—it required balancing heritage, sustainability, and modern living. Key aspects of the solution include:

  • Heritage Preservation and Adaptive Reuse:
    The late 16th-century building at 23 Old Market Street has been converted into two elegant townhouses. A third townhouse was added to the rear, designed in gault brick with a clay pantile roof, seamlessly blending into the historic fabric. These changes included upgrades to roof and window insulation, maintaining the structure's integrity while making it fit for modern use

  • New Developments in Harmony with History:
    The project extends to the adjacent site, where two derelict garage/workshop buildings were replaced by a mews development of six townhouses. The designs incorporate local vernacular elements such as flint work, gault brick, and cream-rendered finishes.

  • Courtyard as a Central Feature:
    The development is centred around a beautifully finished courtyard that mirrors historic yard designs common in the area. Asphalt surfaces with decorative paving detail provide an inviting communal space, while remote-controlled gates offer both security and exclusivity.

  • Environmental Sensitivity:
    Tree preservation was a priority, with protection measures implemented for trees under preservation orders, including a sycamore and a yew. Situated adjacent to Castle Hill, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, and within a Conservation Area, the site demanded extensive archaeological evaluations and adherence to heritage guidelines. The removal of asbestos-laden structures and the use of traditional, durable materials helped balance environmental and aesthetic concerns.
